1. Why did you start to practice Kung - fu?
When I was young, my health and my character were not strong enough and I was very often ill and afraid. I was feeling useless One day my uncle advised me to start training Kung Fu to become stronger to face any challenge in my life, to find balance for myself and to be able to defend myself as well. For these reasons I decided to start training Kung Fu.
2. Why so many styles? One style is not enough?
This
is a good question! Why do we have so many styles?
It happens not only in Kung Fu but in other subjects also, such
as Dance, Music, Sports, Cooking, Religion, Politics etc.
This differentiation happens due to different time, place, the different
needs and the people's background that practice the style or the
subjects. Character, experience, understanding, purpose and the
conditions are only some variables. Through centuries we have many
different opinions and experiences inculcated into this art. Starting
from one style and from one to grow into two, from two to three,
this is the way of natural development of the art that creates the
variety of styles we have and will continue so. But although one
style may be more than enough for somebody, for somebody else one
may be not enough. It depends on the purpose of the practitioner.
There are two sides to everything. The good side for involving into
many different styles is that you will learn more skills and attain
more knowledge, but on the other hand you will more easily get confused
from the different styles you are practicing. I strongly recommend
to the practitioner to start practicing one style of Kung Fu and
training to build a strong foundation and skills on it, than to
involve into more than one.
You can drink different kind of tea but not at the same time!
3. Is there any connection between them? What is different and what is the same?
All the styles of kung fu are connected. All the styles combine the Chinese Medicine, Physics, Philosophy, Logic, Psychology and self-defense. The idea, the practical function, and the goal are the same but the way and the characteristics are different.
4. All styles of Kung - fu practice forms, why?
Form in Kung Fu is the way to guide the practitioner into the style. It is the key of the style. The forms are developed by different individuals for various purposes. Forms are used to develop power, grace, endurance, balance, coordination. In practicing kung fu forms, the mind and the mental aspects must be involved in all types of physical activities. Forms' training is necessary and a very important step in learning a style. When practicing forms you must know the purposes of the form and understand the details of the movements, as well as their applications.
5. What are other necessary parts of Kung - fu practice?
Besides practicing forms, the stretching exercises, the breathing exercises (Chi Kung), meditation and the fighting application training are very important components for all styles. Of course many well known exercises such as Iron palm, Wooden Dummy, Sand Bag, Iron Ring, Forearm strike, fingers strike, Pushing Hands etc are absolutely necessary for some styles but for some others are not, it depends on the Characteristic of the style.
6. Why do you take part in competition?
My purpose during the competition is neither the medal, nor the comparison of myself with other people; the opponent is I. This is the way that competition can help me to improve myself to find my new maximum and to be refreshed and ready all the time.
7. What is the secret of your success, the success of your students?
I can't say I am successful but I can tell you my secret for approaching success: loyalty and honesty to myself and to my students and working hard together. This is my secret!
8. How do you live - in comparison with "normal" people? Do you have some special healthy lifestyle?
I
am not a special person, I am not a monk. I follow nature and listen
to my body. I eat everything, I drink but not much, I do not smoke
and I live as a normal person, nothing special.
I believe in the healthy way of life, namely to find the balance
between the mental and the physical and to control yourself in a
harmonious way.
9. When someone wants to start to practice, how to choose the style?
Firstly they have to know their purposes, why they want to practice Kung Fu. These are according to their background, age, the physical condition, mental aspect, and the characters of the person. These variables will lead them to choose the style. If they don't know the differences among the styles of Kung fu, the best way is to ask for an advice from someone who knows the art. But beware the answer of the advised: mostly the advice is: "My style is the best for you"!
10. How does one choose a good teacher? What is the most important quality of a good teacher?
In
China, according to the old way you choose a good teacher by following
three steps: the first step is to watch. To watch his performance
and his behavior. The second is to listen: to listen to his opinion
and the knowledge of his arts. The third step is to touch: touching
means physical contact with him to realize the ability of the teacher.
Of course you must ask for this in a proper way and not as a challenge.
But above all the most important thing is the morality of the teacher.
Nowadays you can also use the same way to choose a good teacher.
11. Do you have any motto for your life?
Learn to walk before you run.

Grand
Master Liu Jing Rou's birthday just happened to coincide with one
of the seminar days in Greece. However, as he was teaching on a
six hour daily basis, there was no celebration on that day. The
instructors and students of "Tang's Chinese Kung Fu Association"
(T.C.K.F.A.), however, did not forget to honour the Grand Master.
So, on the 2nd April, a big birthday party was organised on his
behalf at the Golden Phoenix Chinese restaurant, at Elliniko. About
200 people celebrated Grand Master Liu Jing Rou's birthday and wished
him many more, something which is almost certain, seeing as at the
age of 70, he has the appearance of a 40 year old and the physical
ability of a 20 year old athlete.
The
festivity included drinks, music and dancing and of course plenty
of excellent Chinese food, prepared by the expert chefs of the restaurant.
All the teachers and instructors of the T.C.K.F.A. attended, as
did many of the students and supporters of Kung Fu.
Among the guests, was the publisher of the magazines "The Path to
Martial Arts" and "Asian Martial Arts", Mr. Dionisis Tsetselis,
with his wife and daughter, the Greek Wu Shu Federation representatives,
as well as instructors of other martial arts systems.
The evening went very well and the conversation revolved mainly
around none other than Kung Fu and its teachings, of which Grand
Master Liu Jing Rou is one of the most renowned representatives
worldwide.
Grand Master Liu Jing Rou and assistant Master Hung Sheng, left
our country on April 5th, leaving behind a new generation of instructors
and students of Kung Fu as well as an older generation of already
established teachers and instructors of the art, who had the opportunity
of getting to know these great Masters first-hand, and the luck
of being taught and trained by them.
Both generations hope to have them back again, in the near future.
